The pirates were able to take her from the Surfer when they attached a collar attached to Nova’s nervous system. When he reaches them he easily defeats them and rescues Nova. While she was taken, the Surfer realized he shared a bond with her and finally pledges himself and his soul to her. But Nova soon transforms, for it was not Nova that he pledged his soul to- it was his greatest enemy, Mephisto.
